QE553 : Provenance, sedimentary environment and diagenesis of Shurijeh Formation in East of Kopeh Dagh basin, Shurab section

Abstarct: The Shourijeh Formation has been studied in the Shurab section east of Kopeh Dagh in the northeast of Mashhad city. The Shourijeh Formation is a collection of siliciclastic rocks, which is about 220 meters thick in this sequence. The Shourijeh Formation in this section consists of 3 strata units including conglomerate, sandstone and shale. According to facies studies, 8 lithofacies including coarse-grained (Gcm, Gmm, Gp, Gh), medium-grained (Sh, Sm) and fine-grained (Fm) facies were identified. baxsed on this, the structural elements SG, GB, CH, SB, OF have been identified, which show a braided river environment. The petrography of thin sections and the results of modal analysis show that the sandstone samples are litharnite (13 samples), feldspathic litharnite (5 samples), lithic arkose (1 sample), sub-arkose (1 sample) and sublitharnite (2 samples). Diagenesis studies in different sandstone petrofacies, indicated various diagenesis processes, such as types of intergranular contacts (point, longitudinal, convex-concave and concave), types of calcite cement (transparent spar, calcite, dolomite), hematite cement and silica cement, dissolution, replacement, alteration and types of fracture and filling. baxsed on petrographic studies and examination of various types of quartz grains, according to the abundance of mono crystalline quartz grains with straight to slightly wavy extinction and tourmaline inclusions, a plutonic source rock is suggested for these quartzes. The abundance of potassium feldspars compared to plagioclase can also be one of the reasons for the plutonic source of these sandstones. At the same time, the presence of heavy and resistant minerals such as rounded tourmaline, rutile and zircon, as well as the presence of sedimentary rock fragments, especially of chert type, can indicate the role of erosion of older sedimentary deposits during the sedimentary cycle in the formation of sandstones of Shourijeh Formation. baxsed on the results of the meodal analysis, the tectonic provenance of the sandstones of Shourijeh Formation is sedimentary recycled to cratonic, and also the climate of the source area was found to be semi-humid. Finally, geochemical studies have shown that the tectonic setting of the Shourijeh Formation sandstones is in the passive continental margin and these sediments were deposited in oxidizing conditions.
